Definition
Private equity firm controlling the borrowing company.
Sponsor in plain English
In these deals, "the borrower" is a company — but a company doesn't decide anything on its own; whoever owns it calls the shots. The sponsor is the private equity firm that bought and controls that company, meaning they hold the steering wheel: picking management, setting strategy, and deciding big moves. So when a lender sizes up a loan, they're really betting on the sponsor's skill and judgment as much as the company itself. Picture a house-flipping investor who buys a property and runs the whole renovation — the sponsor plays that role for an entire business.
