Cap Table in plain English
A cap table (short for capitalization table) is the master list of who owns what slice of a company. It shows every type of owner — founders, employees with stock, and various investors — and the exact percentage each holds. Picture the ownership of a company as a pizza: the cap table is the diagram showing how big everyone's slice is, and it updates every time a new investor buys in and the pizza gets re-cut. Anyone putting money into a company studies it carefully, because it reveals exactly how much of the business — and its future payoff — they'd actually own.
