Command of evidence (quantitative)

SAT glossary · Reading & Writing

Definition

The skill of reading a graph or table and selecting the statement it supports. The trap is a statement that misreads the axis, confuses rate with total, or overstates what the data show.

Command of evidence (quantitative) in plain English

This tests whether you can read information straight off a graph, chart, or table and correctly match it to a statement that the data actually SUPPORTS. The trap answers are statements that sound reasonable but subtly misread something specific about the graph — like reading the wrong axis, confusing a RATE (how fast something changes) with a TOTAL (the overall amount), or claiming the data shows something bigger or stronger than what it actually shows.
