Finding Intercepts by Substitution

SAT Glossary

To find the x-intercept set y=0; to find the y-intercept set x=0. The intercept is named for the axis it touches, and you set the *other* variable to zero — every point on the x-axis has height zero. Students invert this constantly because 'x-intercept' contains the letter x; the coordinate-swapped points are the distractor that rewards them.
