Convicted
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · English
Definition
Found guilty by a court.
Convicted in plain English
To be convicted means a court has officially decided you are guilty of a crime. It happens at the end of a trial (or after someone admits guilt), when a judge or jury looks at the evidence and concludes the person really did break the law. This matters for citizenship because being convicted of certain crimes can affect whether someone qualifies to become a U.S. citizen, so the N-400 application asks about it honestly.
