Oath of Allegiance
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · English
Definition
The sworn promise that completes naturalization at the ceremony.
Oath of Allegiance in plain English
This is the promise you say out loud at the very end of becoming a U.S. citizen — it's the moment that makes it official. You swear to be loyal to the United States, to give up loyalty to any other country's ruler, and to defend the country's laws and Constitution. Think of it like the final signature on a huge agreement: everything before it was paperwork and interviews, but until you speak these words at the ceremony, you're not a citizen yet. Once you take the Oath, you legally are one.
