Physical presence
U.S. Naturalization Test (2025 Standard) glossary · English
Definition
Actual days spent inside the U.S.; a counted naturalization requirement.
Physical presence in plain English
Physical presence means the actual number of days your body was physically inside the United States — not days you owned a home here or had a visa, but days you were really standing on U.S. soil. It matters because to become a citizen you usually must have been physically present for a certain amount of time (often at least half of the required years). Think of it like a class where attendance is counted: it's not enough to be enrolled — you have to actually show up enough days, and trips abroad subtract from your total.
