Accumulation

Volume Price Analysis glossary · Wyckoff'S Laws & The Four Market Phases

Definition

The phase in which insiders buy inventory at low (wholesale) prices, creating a congestion zone at the base of a decline.

Accumulation in plain English

Accumulation is the "buying at wholesale" phase — the smart money loading up cheap after a long price drop, the way a savvy shopper fills their cart during a clearance sale nobody else is watching. Because they buy slowly over time so as not to spike the price, the chart goes flat and sideways at the bottom of the decline, forming a congestion zone (a boring, range-bound patch where price just bounces between a floor and ceiling). It looks dull and directionless, but under the surface inventory is quietly changing hands from scared sellers to confident buyers, which typically sets up the next move higher.
