Read the following passage, then answer the question.
When the storm finally passed, the lighthouse keeper climbed the spiral stairs to inspect the lamp. The great lens had held. Below, the village still slept, unaware that for six hours he had hand-cranked the rotation mechanism after the motor drowned. He felt no need to tell them. The light had turned; the ships had passed safely; that was the whole of his reward.
As it is used in the last sentence, the phrase 'the whole of his reward' most nearly means that the keeper:
