In the years after the war, my grandfather rarely spoke of what he had seen, but he never threw anything away. A bent nail, a length of string, a jar of mismatched buttons—each had its drawer, its purpose waiting to be discovered. As a child I thought him merely thrifty. Only later did I understand that for a man who had once had everything taken from him, keeping even the smallest object was a quiet way of insisting that nothing need ever be lost again.
