A survey of readers of Alpine Quarterly, a magazine devoted to extreme mountaineering, found that 85% of respondents rated a new ultralight tent favorably. The tent manufacturer concludes that the tent will be popular with the general camping public.
The manufacturer's conclusion is most vulnerable to the criticism that it:
- Fails to consider that ultralight tents in general tend to be considerably more expensive than standard camping tents on the market.
- Draws a conclusion about ordinary campers from a small sample of enthusiasts whose gear priorities differ sharply from theirs.
- Assumes that every single reader who responded to the survey actually owns and has personally used the ultralight tent in question.
- Neglects to report what percentage of Alpine Quarterly's total readership chose to respond to the survey in the first place.
- Overlooks the fact that reader surveys of this kind are generally an unreliable method for gauging any product's quality.
