The reintroduction of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park in 1995, after a seventy-year absence, has become one of the most widely cited examples of a trophic cascade, the process by which a change at the top of a food web propagates downward through multiple levels. The commonly told version runs as follows: wolves reduced elk numbers and altered elk behavior, elk grazing pressure on streamside vegetation consequently declined, willow and aspen stands recovered, beavers returned to exploit the recovering woody vegetation, and beaver dams in turn created wetland habitat for songbirds and amphibians, so that a single predator's return cascaded into a broader recovery of riparian ecosystems.
Several ecologists who have re-examined the long-term data caution that this narrative compresses a more tangled reality into an unearned simplicity. Elk populations in Yellowstone were already declining before wolf reintroduction, driven partly by drought and by an increase in other predators such as grizzly bears, so attributing the full elk decline to wolves alone overstates a single cause among several operating simultaneously. Vegetation recovery, moreover, has been markedly uneven across the park, robust in some drainages and negligible in others, a pattern that correlates at least as strongly with local hydrology and soil moisture as with any measurable change in elk browsing pressure. Even the celebrated return of beavers appears, in some drainages, to have preceded rather than followed measurable willow recovery, complicating a story in which vegetation recovery is supposed to have created the conditions beavers required.
None of this evidence overturns wolves' documented effect on elk behavior, which is well established even where population effects remain contested. What the reassessment suggests instead is that the trophic cascade functioned as a genuinely appealing narrative substantially before the supporting data were complete enough to bear its full weight, and that subsequent, more heterogeneous findings have been absorbed only slowly into a story whose narrative simplicity had already proven durable.
