This structure minimizes the communication latency that frequently plagues large hierarchies, allowing for localized optimization. Yet, as the organization scales, the absence of centralized coordination often results in "functional siloing," where disparate teams develop redundant or incompatible software architectures. Centralization advocates argue that a unified technical roadmap is essential to maintain a coherent user experience and to leverage economies of scale across the platform. Nevertheless, imposing top-down control can inadvertently stifle the very agility that enabled the firm’s initial success. A study of mid-cap software firms indicates that those employing "hybrid governance"—centralized standards with decentralized execution—exhibited higher retention of top-tier talent than firms that pivoted exclusively to a centralized command structure.
