Cash conversion cycle

CFA Level I Glossary

The cash conversion cycle measures how long cash is tied up in operations. It equals days inventory outstanding plus days sales outstanding minus days payables outstanding. A shorter cycle usually means cash returns faster; a negative cycle can mean suppliers are effectively financing the firm. The trap is assuming a longer cycle always means poor management, when industry structure and bargaining power also matter.
