Coefficient of variation

CFA Level I Glossary

The coefficient of variation is standard deviation divided by the mean. It is a unit-free measure of risk per unit of expected outcome, useful when series have different scales or units. Higher CV means more dispersion relative to the average. People confuse it with the Sharpe ratio, which uses excess return over the risk-free rate rather than the raw mean in the denominator role of comparison.
