Conditional expectation

CFA Level I Glossary

Conditional expectation is the expected value of a random variable given known information. As new information arrives, the conditional expectation updates. In finance, asset prices are often modeled as conditional expectations of discounted future payoffs under a pricing measure. People sometimes treat an unconditional average as if it already incorporated today’s information.
