Definition: Z-spread

CFA Level I Glossary

The Z-spread is the constant spread added to every spot rate on the benchmark curve so that the discounted cash flows equal the bond’s market price. It measures credit and liquidity compensation relative to the spot curve for option-free bonds. Unlike a single yield spread to one benchmark yield, it uses the whole spot curve. For bonds with embedded options, option-adjusted spread is the more comparable metric.
