Empirical duration

CFA Level I Glossary

Empirical duration is rate sensitivity estimated from real market price changes via regression on yield changes. Analytical duration comes from a model of cash flows and discounting. For high-yield bonds, empirical duration is often below analytical duration because spread widening can offset rate declines. Relying only on model duration when the bond has large credit components can misstate hedge ratios.
