Formula: Beta (β) calculated from covariance

CFA Level I Glossary

Beta is covariance with the market divided by market variance. That ratio is the slope in the market model regression of asset excess returns on market excess returns. Higher covariance with the market means higher systematic risk. Confusing covariance with correlation, or swapping numerator and denominator, produces distractor answers.
