Formula: Real rate of return (Exact Fisher Relation)

CFA Level I Glossary

The exact real return removes inflation multiplicatively: r_real = (1 + r_nominal) / (1 + π) − 1. It measures growth in purchasing power more accurately than a simple subtraction when inflation is material. The approximation r_nominal − π is fine for small rates but not when the question asks for exact. Using the approximation when exact is required is a standard distractor path.
