Fraud triangle

CFA Level I Glossary

The fraud triangle says fraudulent reporting is more likely when motivation (pressure), opportunity, and rationalization intersect. Strong controls reduce opportunity; culture and incentives affect pressure and rationalization. Analysts use it as a qualitative risk frame for reporting quality. Having one side of the triangle alone does not prove fraud, which vignettes sometimes imply.
