GDP deflator

CFA Level I Glossary

The GDP deflator is nominal GDP divided by real GDP, measuring the price level of all domestic production with current weights. It is broader than CPI, which tracks a fixed household consumption basket. The deflator can tell a different inflation story when investment or government prices move differently from consumer prices. Using CPI and the GDP deflator as if they were identical is a common slip.
