High-water mark

CFA Level I Glossary

A high-water mark is the NAV peak above which a manager may charge incentive fees again. It prevents charging performance fees twice for recovering the same losses. Fees on new gains only restart after surpassing the prior high. Soft hurdles without high-water marks can still allow fees after drawdowns in ways investors dislike.
