Look-ahead bias

CFA Level I Glossary

Look-ahead bias occurs when a backtest uses information that would not have been knowable at the decision time. Examples include using restated financials, final index membership before announcement, or future revisions. It inflates simulated performance and kills out-of-sample reliability. Survivorship bias is related but different: it drops failed names rather than using future information.
