Money-weighted return

CFA Level I Glossary

Money-weighted return is the IRR of an account’s actual external cash flows and ending value. Large contributions before strong performance boost it; large contributions before weak performance hurt it. It reflects the investor’s personal result. Time-weighted return is preferred for manager evaluation when the manager does not control cash-flow timing.
