Notching

CFA Level I Glossary

Notching is the practice of rating a specific debt issue above or below the issuer’s general credit rating to reflect security, seniority, or subordination. Secured notes may be notched up; subordinated notes notched down. Issue ratings and issuer ratings are therefore not always identical. Candidates sometimes treat every bond of an issuer as sharing one rating without structural adjustments.
