Pecking order

CFA Level I Glossary

Pecking-order theory says firms prefer internal funds first, then debt, then equity last when financing investments. Asymmetric information makes outside equity especially costly in the story. It is a financing preference ranking, not a claim about optimal static debt ratios from trade-off theory. Exam items often contrast pecking order with trade-off theory of capital structure.
