Profitability index

CFA Level I Glossary

The profitability index is the present value of future cash inflows divided by the initial outlay, sometimes written as 1 + NPV/outlay. It measures value created per dollar invested and helps rank projects under capital rationing. A PI above 1 means positive NPV. Ranking by NPV alone can differ from ranking by PI when budgets are constrained.
