Repurchase agreement

CFA Level I Glossary

A repurchase agreement is collateralized borrowing structured as a sale of a security today and a forward repurchase later at a higher price. The implied interest rate is the repo rate. The security is collateral; haircuts protect the lender against price declines. Treating repo as an unsecured loan or forgetting the collateral mechanics misses the point.
