Roll yield

CFA Level I Glossary

Roll yield is the return component from futures prices converging toward spot as contracts approach expiration, and from rolling positions along a sloping curve. It tends to be positive in backwardation and negative in contango for long futures positions held over time. Spot price changes are a separate return driver. Candidates often attribute all commodity futures returns to spot moves alone.
