Sortino ratio

CFA Level I Glossary

The Sortino ratio measures excess return relative to downside deviation rather than total standard deviation. It repairs Sharpe’s equal treatment of upside and downside volatility when returns are skewed. Higher Sortino means more reward per unit of harmful volatility. Replacing downside deviation with full standard deviation just recreates Sharpe under another name.
