Stop order

CFA Level I Glossary

A stop order becomes a market order once a trigger price is reached. Activation at the stop is intended, but the final execution price is not guaranteed, especially in fast markets. Stop-limit orders add a limit after the trigger but may not fill. People often treat a stop as a guaranteed exit price, which it is not.
