Term: Bottom-up forecasting

CFA Level I Glossary

Bottom-up forecasting builds firm revenue and earnings from product lines, units, prices, and segment drivers, then aggregates to the total. It is grounded in operational detail and market share at a granular level. Top-down forecasting starts from macro and industry totals instead. Using only one approach without a cross-check can miss either macro constraints or company-specific reality.
