An IPO is the first sale of a company’s shares to the public in the primary market. It raises capital for the firm (or selling shareholders) and creates a public market for the stock. Secondary offerings and private placements are different capital-market events. Candidates sometimes call any large equity issue an IPO even when the firm is already public.
