Term: Jensen's Alpha

CFA Level I Glossary

Jensen’s alpha is actual (or average) return minus the CAPM-required return given beta and the market risk premium. Positive alpha means outperformance relative to the security market line. It adjusts for systematic risk, not total volatility. Comparing alpha with Sharpe without noticing the different risk denominator is a common performance-evaluation mix-up.
