Treasury stock method

CFA Level I Glossary

The treasury stock method computes incremental shares for dilutive options and warrants in diluted EPS. Assumed exercise proceeds are used to repurchase shares at the average market price for the period; only the net incremental shares enter the denominator. In-the-money options relative to average price are the usual candidates. Using period-end price instead of average price, or forgetting the repurchase offset, are common errors.
