Willingness vs. ability

CFA Level I Glossary

Risk willingness is the client’s psychological attitude toward risk. Risk ability is the objective capacity based on wealth, horizon, liquidity needs, and constraints. When they conflict, the investment policy should honor the lower of the two so the plan remains both acceptable and feasible. Overriding low ability because the client feels brave is a classic IPS mistake.
