Pre-Pack

Corporate Credit Analysis glossary · Corporate Credit Analysis

Definition

A pre-packaged bankruptcy or administration, negotiated before filing and implemented shortly after. Reduces operational disruption, professional fees, and time-in-court relative to a free-fall Chapter 11.

Pre-Pack in plain English

A pre-pack is a bankruptcy where the company and its major lenders quietly agree on the entire rescue plan BEFORE they officially file, then push it through court almost immediately. Normal bankruptcy can drag on for months with huge legal bills and a business that slowly bleeds customers and staff while everyone argues. By settling the deal in advance, a pre-pack skips most of that chaos and cost. It's like agreeing on exactly how to split everything the night before, so the actual meeting takes ten minutes instead of a week of fighting.
