Through the Cycle

Corporate Credit Analysis glossary · Ratings, Syndication & Market Dynamics

Definition

A rating philosophy that smooths over cyclical variation to provide stable ratings across the business cycle. Contrasted with point-in-time approaches; agency ratings are predominantly through-the-cycle.

Through the Cycle in plain English

Imagine a friend who never freaks out — when things are booming they don't get giddy, and when a rough patch hits they don't panic. A "through the cycle" rating tries to be that friend: it judges how risky a company is over the ups AND downs of a whole economy, so the rating doesn't yo-yo every time the news changes. The big rating agencies work this way on purpose, because lenders want a steady, long-run read on "will this company pay me back," not a jittery one. The opposite, "point-in-time," snaps to today's conditions and moves around a lot more.
