Arithmetic Mean
GMAT glossary · Quantitative Reasoning
Definition
The sum of values divided by the number of values.
Arithmetic Mean in plain English
The arithmetic mean is just the everyday 'average' you already know: add everything up, then split it evenly by how many things there are. If three friends scored 6, 8, and 10 on a quiz, you add to get 24 and divide by 3 to get a mean of 8, as if all three had scored equally. It answers, 'If we redistributed the total so everyone had the same amount, how much would each get?'
