Inequality

GMAT glossary · Quantitative Reasoning

Definition

A mathematical statement comparing two expressions using <, >, ≤, or ≥.

Inequality in plain English

An inequality is like an equation's cousin, but instead of saying two things are exactly equal, it says one is bigger or smaller than the other. The symbols tell you the relationship: < means 'less than', > means 'greater than', and adding a line underneath (≤ or ≥) means 'or equal to' as well. So x > 5 describes every number past 5, not just one answer, it's a way to talk about whole ranges of possibilities, which is exactly why it shows up so often in real problems.
