Discrete Data

GMAT glossary · Quantitative Reasoning

Definition

Quantitative data restricted to isolated values (typically integers).

Discrete Data in plain English

Discrete data is counting stuff that can only land on separate, whole values with nothing in between, like the number of students in a class or cars in a lot. You can have 3 students or 4 students, but never 3.7 students; the values are isolated dots, not a smooth line. Contrast that with something like height or weight, which can be any in-between amount. Quick test: if 'half of one' makes no sense, it's probably discrete.
