Probability

GMAT glossary · Quantitative Reasoning

Definition

A measure of the likelihood of an event, expressed as a number between 0 and 1 (inclusive), where 0 means impossible and 1 means certain.

Probability in plain English

Probability is just a number that measures how likely something is to happen, placed on a scale from 0 to 1. Zero means it can't happen (rolling a 7 on a normal die), 1 means it's guaranteed (the sun rising), and something like 0.5 means a 50-50 shot, like a coin landing heads. You can also read it as a percent, 0.5 is 50%, which makes it an easy way to talk about chance precisely instead of vaguely saying 'probably.'
