Subset

GMAT glossary · Verbal Reasoning

Definition

A set all of whose elements belong to a larger set.

Subset in plain English

A set is just a collection of things, and a subset is a smaller group taken entirely from inside a bigger group, every member of the subset also belongs to the bigger set. For example, if the big set is 'all the fruit in your kitchen,' then 'just the apples' is a subset, because every apple is also a fruit in your kitchen. The key idea is nothing in the subset can be an outsider; it all has to already be part of the larger set.
