Absolute neutrophil count
NCLEX-RN glossary · Reduction Of Risk Potential
Definition
A count of a client's infection-fighting neutrophils, found with: WBC count x (% Neutrophils + % Bands) / 100.
Absolute neutrophil count in plain English
It guides neutropenic precautions; a value <500/mm^3 indicates severe risk for life-threatening sepsis. The main trap is accepting a total white blood cell count within the normal range as a safety indicator without calculating the specific neutrophil fraction.
