Corrected calcium estimate
NCLEX-RN glossary · Reduction Of Risk Potential
Definition
A mathematical adjustment of the serum calcium level based on the client's current albumin concentration.
Corrected calcium estimate in plain English
This is necessary for identifying true calcium deficiencies in clients with low albumin who might otherwise appear to have normal calcium levels. A frequent error is interpreting a total calcium level within the normal range as safe when the client's low albumin is masking hypocalcemia.
