Central-line complication
NCLEX-RN glossary · Pharmacological And Parenteral Therapies
Definition
Adverse events associated with central venous access devices, including infection, air embolism, or catheter occlusion.
Central-line complication in plain English
The RN must apply sterile techniques and monitor for systemic cues of sepsis or localized mechanical failure to maintain parenteral safety. A common mistake is forcibly flushing a central line that meets resistance, which can cause catheter rupture or embolization of a thrombus.
