Digoxin toxicity
NCLEX-RN glossary · Pharmacological And Parenteral Therapies
Definition
A state of drug accumulation that results in GI distress and potentially fatal heart rhythm disturbances.
Digoxin toxicity in plain English
The RN must assess the apical pulse and potassium levels prior to administration to prevent toxicity. The main trap is administering a dose of digoxin when the client reports new visual changes because the heart rate is above the 60 beats-per-minute threshold.
