Infiltration
NCLEX-RN glossary · Pharmacological And Parenteral Therapies
Definition
The unintentional administration of a non-vesicant IV solution into the surrounding subcutaneous tissue due to catheter displacement or vein rupture.
Infiltration in plain English
Can cause localized pain and edema and requires stopping the infusion immediately to prevent further tissue damage. The main trap is mistaking infiltration for phlebitis and applying the wrong thermal therapy (e.g., applying heat to an infiltration that requires coolness).
