Status epilepticus
NCLEX-RN glossary · Pharmacological And Parenteral Therapies
Definition
A continuous seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes or repeated seizures without a return to consciousness in between.
Status epilepticus in plain English
This is a medical emergency requiring immediate airway protection and the administration of benzodiazepines to stop neuronal damage. The main trap is waiting too long to intervene with pharmacological rescue because the seizure has not yet lasted 10 or 20 minutes.
